Tisane Anybody?

We’ve all enjoyed the popular beverage Tea. Whether hot, cold, green, black or white. Sweetened or naturally flavored – Tea is terrific!
So what’s Tisane? How is it different? What’s it like?  Read on!!
So what exactly is Tisane? It’s simply an herbal infusion made with a single or combination of medicinal herbs from a WIDE VARIETY of sources.  Teas come from the Camellia SInensis plant which produces the popular green, black, and white Teas.
Tisane is made with various parts of different plants such as flowers, roots, herbs, spices and even fruits! 
Tisanes contain a broad spectrum of health benefits. These plant alkaloids are nourishing to the body and helps in numerous ways including*:
  • Boosting our immune system 
  • Reducing Stress and Anxiety
  • Increasing restful sleep
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Relieving pain
  • Relieving upset stomach and nausea

With a variety of Botanicals to choose from you can customize your perfect concoction. Many of these herbs are available in Pre Blended mixes to help with specific purposes as mentioned.
Whether for medicinal purposes or pleasure Tisane is terrific too and can be healthier than Tea!

Move out of the way caffeine! This is one of the benefits of drinking Tisane. Unlike all Teas,
Tisane is caffeine-free!

Simple hot infusion:
Heat water until it just comes to a boil.
Scoop 1 to 3 teaspoons of dried herbs into the pot,
cover to submerge and to prevent any volatile oils from escaping. Steep for 10 minutes or up to 1 hour and strain.

These are some of my favorite herbs I use to make infusions:

Chamomile Buds

Chamomile- It’s Apple like Aroma and delicate flowers make a lovely infusion. Traditionally used for easing indigestion, Nervous stomach upset, calming the nervous system especially stress and anxiety, and promoting restful sleep there for helping with insomnia. A wonderful nerve tonic.

Hibiscus- This beautiful aromatic infusion is made from the flowers of Hibiscus sabdariffa. Its fruity, refreshing flavor is a delight that many enjoy hot or iced. It is packed with vitamin C and wonderful antioxidants that may help with lowering blood pressure, reducing cholesterol levels, and fighting free radicals, which cause damage to our cells.+  To make an iced infusion simply follow the directions on making your infusion and once it’s at room temperature you may stored in the fridge.

Peppermint- Aids digestion By increasing stomach acidity, may be an aid for abdominal pain and other GI discomfort. Can be enjoyed alone or add a refreshing twist to you concoction.

Ginger- An overall tonic. Rarely used alone, however it is commonly used in Chinese medicine to balance and increase the effectiveness of a formula. Digestive tonic, warming, stimulate circulation, indigestion, morning sickness, nausea, muscle pain, cleanses the colon and fights inflammation. Ginger is very warming in properties. It’s excellent for warming a cold body however use caution where there are signs of excess heat present such as: commonly feeling hot or dry, sweating, not sleeping well at night ect.

Lemon Balm- Light, lemony aroma. For centuries lemon balm has been used traditionally to help aid with nervous tension and anxiety. Calming to the nervous system and supporting healthy digestion it’s no wonder in Southern Europe is referred to as the “bringer of gladness,”!

Echinacea- According to Balch, “Fights inflammation and bacterial and viral infections. Stimulate certain white blood cells. Good for the immune system and lymphatic system. Useful for allergies, colic, colds, flu, and other infectious illnesses..”- prescription for nutritional healing 5th edition.

Rooibos- The traditional South African brew has gained popularity all over the world for many reasons. “Rooibos” translates to “red bush,” because this infusion turns a red hue when it is brewed. Rooibos has anti-inflammatory benefits. It is rich in antioxidants called polyphenols, which are chemical compounds that allow plants to fight stress. When people eat foods rich in polyphenols, they are less likely to suffer from inflammation.#

Sun tea- a solar infusion

Using the natural warmth and light of the sun to extract the healing properties of herbs is a very traditional method. These infusions are much lighter and then those who are simmered using a stove top method however they also have great benefits.

To Make a Sun Infusion: Place the appropriate amount of verbs using the same portions as you would with an infusion in a glass jar with a tight fitting lid fill with room temperature or cold water and cover. You can let sit in the sun for several hours. You will notice the water change color as the plants realease their natural pigments.
